With Lime you can rent pushbikes, assisted e-bikes and scooters by the hour. Which are conveniently dotted around cities, in the areas that you might need them. Sometimes thrown in the river, but more often than not, on land, fully-charged and dry. Lime kicked it all off in San Francisco along with lots of many of the tech companies you know and recognise today including Airbnb, Uber, and Lyft. When I was researching Lime for this write up I had to laugh at some of their location choices.

Yes sure all the big ones are listed; New York, Berlin & Madrid. However I was writing this to a U.K audience, of which Lime has locations in London (sensible choice being the Capital and all) and MILTON KEYNES! Milton Keynes for anyone that knows it knows it shouldn’t be the second location in the U.K for any company to base their service.

Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol and Leeds of course. But no, they went straight to Milton Keynes and seemingly stopped there.

Either way I used Lime a few years ago in Los Angeles and it worked as expected, allowing me to zip around the city, as opposed to walking around, like a chump. The problem is that there is so many of these types of services, all backed by angel investors and seed funding, and I don’t actually think there’s much demand for it. All it takes if you one scooter to get thrown in a river and that’s potentially a days revenue gone.

Some cities also already offer services like this already which have a far greater infrastructure. Like Bicing in Barcelona or the (whatever it’s called now, Boris, Barclays) bike in London. Probably has changed its name 4 times since I wrote this.
